European Leadership Development Programme (EuLDP)
Leadership skills are important for any ophthalmologist and in particular for
those who are active in professional societies. In the past, SOE sponsored
several European ophthalmologists to take part in the Leadership Development
Programme organised by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Recognising the
complex nature of Europe, SOE has now set up its own EuLDP with the aim to
identify future leaders of European Ophthalmology, to offer basic leadership
training adapted for ophthalmology and to provide an informal network of peers.
SOE has already begun the second European Leadership Development Programme (EuLDP),
including four meetings:
- a brief session that started at the SOE 2007 congress in Vienna
- a working module held in Stockholm (April 2008)
- a working module that will be held in San Francisco (November 2008)
- the final session that will take place in Amsterdam in June 2009
The Stockholm session focused on the EU and on scientific leadership. The
overall impression was that the meeting was very well received. Professor Stefan
Seregard is now stepping down as Director and will be replaced by Professor
Nikolaos Bechrakis from Austria to organise the next EuLDP programme. The EuLDP
is in part supported by the industry and counted around 30 participants this
year. For more information please visit

SOE Lectures
2008 was the third year of implementation of the SOE Lecturers. The recognition is given to promising researchers/clinicians under the age of 40 by each National Society.
These young SOE Lecturers are given a prominent place at the annual meeting of their National Society and are awarded a diploma and voucher for the next SOE congress.
